A background can be made invisible, just like a layer, by toggling on or off its visibility. This allows parts of the overall image to become transparent.
To actually remove your background, you need at least one layer above it. You can create a new layer by going to LAYER...NEW...LAYER or by pressing the layer button. Alternatively you could just paste something in which creates a new layer automatically. Once there's a layer above the background you can easily delete it by selecting it and pressing the delete key on your keyboard.
At any time you can change a background into a layer by selecting it and then going to LAYER...NEW...LAYER FROM BACKGROUND and then hitting OK to create a new layer.
Or, provided you don't have an existing background, you can change a layer into a background by selecting it and going to LAYER...NEW...BACKGROUND FROM LAYER. This will replace the layer's transparency with you palette's background color - making the background non-transparent.
That's it for this tutorial. Please hit the like button and I'll see you next time!
